This Christmas tree is obviously not your typical North Carolina Frazier fir, but it does remind me of all the greenery you see at Christmas: trees, wreaths, and roping. Yellow poplar bark can be seen not only on trees, but also on the side of buildings. You will see poplar bark in Blowing Rock, Boone, and any number of towns in the mountains of North Carolina, and increasingly across the country. When setting up a timber sale it is a good time to think about permanent road construction. This can be truck roads or, in the upper Piedmont and Mountain areas, it may be skid trails as well. On the timber sale in the photograph the location of the road was marked before the timber sale. The road was used as the main skid trail during logging. On most timber sales there will be at least one creek crossing. The crossing method we like best is shown here.
